The EU's enlargement process will influence the way the Union thinks about relationships with its neighbours. The slow pace of enlargement is forcing the EU to think about how to integrate candidate countries more closely before membership and may eventually lead to the development of the status of associate EU member. If enlargement leads to changes in EU relationships with its neighbours, the EU-UK relationship will also be affected. The event will examine questions such as: How likely is it that the EU will develop an associate membership model? What would this look like and what would it mean for the UK? What will staged enlargement mean for EU-UK relations?
